Dementia
A quarter of all hospital beds are taken by people with dementia. One in three of us will get it.
My Mum died as a result if it yesterday.

If you haven't thought about it you should. It will almost certainly effect you at some point.

Lost my nan to it also last October..the whole thing shocked me to my core.
She was 96..but last 2 yrs were heartbreakingly difficult...with her when she died..more a mother to me than grandmother so very close.
Didn't have,a clue who I was at the end....
The horrors of what they and their closest go through is truly shocking.
I sympathise will all that have been brave enough to post on this subject.

Re: Dementia
Thanks for all the kind words.
I posted this as there's been a big thing about dementia in the news today and I wanted to draw it to your attentions.

From the Guardian today.

One in three people born this year will develop dementia, according to new figures.

The Alzheimer’s Research UK charity warned of a “looming national health crisis” as the population ages.

It called for greater efforts across the globe to help develop new treatments.
Dementia affects 850,000 people in the UK, resulting in the loss of brain cells. The most common type is Alzheimer’s disease.

Early symptoms include problems with memory and thinking. As the disease progresses, people can experience difficulty with walking, balance and swallowing.

Alzheimer’s Research UK said age was the biggest risk factor for developing dementia.

As people live longer than ever before, the numbers with dementia will rise. The latest analysis, commissioned by the charity and carried out by the Office of Health Economics, was released to mark World Alzheimer’s Day.

It showed 27% of boys born in 2015 will develop the condition in their lifetime, alongside 37% of girls. Previous research from the same team has estimated that the development of a drug that could delay the onset of dementia by five years would cut the number of cases by a third.

Dr Matthew Norton, head of policy at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “It’s wonderful news that each generation is living longer than the last, but it’s important to ensure that people can enjoy these extra years in good health.

“Dementia is our greatest medical challenge and, if we are to beat it, we must invest in research to find new treatments and preventions.

“Research has the power to transform lives, and our actions now will help determine the future for children born today.”

Sorry for the sad news branded. My nan recently just gone into a residential home, she's 97 and causing mayhem, trying to break out. Wants to move back in her home where she lived 40yrs ago, not her house where she has just come from. My line of work brings me in close contact with this condition and it's sad to see people declining in this way. Keep telling my better half that I don't want to get old and her wiping my chin and other bits.

Sorry to hear that Branded, my Grandad had it, didn't know who anyone was in the end, died in a home when he would not eat, they tube fed him, but to no avail. Worst way to end your life, very demeaning and sad for everyone.

Re: Dementia
Sorry for your loss Branded. My wife's nana has it, we were up at the nursing home yesterday, it is an incredibly sad place to visit. These once able humans have regressed so far it's like they are baby's in a way. We were talking about it on the way home and it's almost the forgotten disease, no one really talks about it, it certainly doesn't get anything like the media attention other illnesses do.

What strikes me is that when we sign in there are hardly any entries from other family's, it's as if the family's are ignoring the problem.

Funnily enough she remembers stuff from the 40s & 50s but can't remember anything recent at all. It's heart breaking really to hear these old people thinking they are 30 years old still and long passed husband/wife's are still alive.

Re: Dementia
My mum has it too. She is in stage 2 I am guessing. Still knows who we are but cannot form new memories.

She still has some quality of life but like Branded says, prepare for it. There are advances being made all the time though and the latest drugs can slow down its effects for a lot of people but the key as always is to confront it asap. That is often problematic as the sufferer will often resist and make any excuse possible. Its largely genetic I think but there is evidence that suggests exercise and diet and keeping your mind active can help stave it off for longer.

Like I say, advances are being made. I think I read that the memories are all there still but the synapses that connect them are kind of blocked. Some cancer treatment drug has supposedly reversed this in mice but no idea yet if it will help us humans.

Sorry to hear your news Branded. In some ways I can imagine its a blessing but still you miss em. Lost my Dad last year and miss the chats.
